Happy 2017!!! On the eve of New Year’s Eve, I realized sequin pants were a MUST. I saw this cute picture on instagram and instantly knew I would be making a pair of sequin pants that night. So I did what any sane person would do. I ran to a big box store as they were closing, got 1-1/2 yards of silver sequins, 6″ of black velvet and a bit of super soft spandex knit. Then I stayed up pretty much all night figuring out a pattern, cutting it out and sewing it all together. And I only had to use the seam ripper once! In the end, it was totally worth it just to wear a little extra sparkle on New Year’s Eve!

(sweater – old (similar here under $15) /  pants – made by me / shoes – available here  (similar under $40 here)

If you follow me on IG, you’ll have seen that I am hosting a second happiness project over there. The first prompt is how to make a New Year’s Resolution you’ll achieve! There is a free printable worksheet you can download here to get started. Make sure to follow me on instagram (@acraftyfox_amanda) this time as I am much better at getting daily posts up over there and there will be worksheets on most days. 🙂

Chewy Molasses Cookie Recipe

At our house, December is cookie season. Between what the neighbors bring by & what I make for our little family, it can be easy to get a little ‘hooked’ on a daily treat. And today I’ll be sharing my favorite chewy molasses cookie recipe. Neighbors will be asking you for the recipe, guaranteed. Sugar cookies get all the attention this time of year, but if you’re ready for something a little more fun, chewy molasses cookies are my favorite!

(don’t forget to enter my favorite things giveaway in my previous post!)

If you’ve been trying to practice self control during this season of sweets, I am going to be no help at all!

Five years ago last week I became a mom for the first time. I don’t need to tell you what a life changing experience that is. I spent nearly 36 hours at home in labor. In between contractions, I made aprons (pattern here) for Christmas presents and made a batch of this molasses cookie dough for the Labor & Delivery nurses I knew I would meet very soon. (My mom baked the cookies while I was at the hospital)Chewy Molasses Cookie Recipe

Now, I make these cookies every year and they are still favorites! These are the softest, chewiest molasses cookies you’ll ever taste. They work perfectly with my favorite Namaste brand gluten free flour. These make great neighbor gifts and look pretty fancy sprinkled with just a bit of powdered sugar!

Serve with a little hot cocoa & a candy cane and you will be feeling ready for Christmas in no time!

Chew Molasses Cookie Recipe

Details: Mug – 20% Off Right Now! (I am hoping for this one for Christmas!), Green Top (My new favorite), Sweater (old), Jeans, and Boots (SO WARM and 40% Off!!) (Similar in more sizes but way more expensive here)

Chewy Molasses Cookie Recipe

Recipe adapted from Betty Crocker Cookbook

1 C Sugar
3/4 C Sour Cream
1/2 C Coconut Oil
1/2 C Butter
1/2 C Molasses
1 Large Egg
2-3/4 C Namaste Brand Gluten Free Flour Blend
1-1/2 t Baking Soda
1 t Cinnamon
1 t Ground Ginger
1/2 t Salt
Powdered Sugar for dusting

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Beat Sugar, Molasses, Sour Cream, Coconut Oil & Butter in a mixer. Add the egg.

Mix the dry ingredients together in a separate bowl. Add them slowly to your wet mixture on medium speed.

Refrigerate for 20 minutes.

Drop teaspoon fulls on a parchment lined cookie sheet.

Bake 10 minutes. Let Cool 10 Minutes & Sprinkle With Powdered Sugar. Then drop off at your neighbors’ home so you don’t eat all of them!

I hope you are having a happy holiday season!!

My little family took this week off. I’ll talk more about that later, but the time away made me realize how much we need to focus on grounding ourselves to the present. Being present is work. It’s easy to get lost in planning for the future, and spend too much time reliving the past.

But this week, my little boy slipped his hand into mine as we were walking along and all of a sudden my wandering mind felt jolted back to the here and now. I loved it and felt truly happy. We had just been running around, my brain filled with a list of to-dos, goals, and the vague sense we really ought to stop to eat but when his little hand tucked into mine, none of it mattered! It’s really funny how love can bring you to the present. And it’s hard to feel down when you have roots in the here and now.

Favorite Appetizer for Holiday Party

Hopefully, during this holiday season, you can find a minute to just look around at the good. Too often horrible stories fill my twitter feed, or the news, and even my beloved instagram. (which is why I’m spending so much time on pinterest!)

Sometimes, I forget there is so much good that gets taken for granted. Instead of letting my thoughts focus on things changing around the world, my family is focusing on our traditional service project this holiday season. We hope to spread happiness as far as we can. And our downtime is spent on gratitude. When we work to be present & grateful, we’ve noticed the mad crush of gimme-gimme-wanty-wanties also seems to vanish.

If you are looking for a place to start, the Mormon church has put together a calendar for their month-long service project #lighttheworld. You can take a peek and see if their daily prompt helps you to focus on the present.

So, here’s my favorite holiday plan for a quick meal party appetizer. (We don’t need to talk about how many times I made this my actual meal, right?) Recently I had the amazing opportunity to get to know Sara over at Our Best Bites. She is such a sweetheart! For our little gathering, she brought some of her olive oils & balsamic vinegars with her to share. They knocked my socks off!

And her cute little heart whisks just make me smile every time I see them! Seriously, who doesn’t want to add a little extra love to their food?

In the interest of sharing both one of my favorite foods and another amazing shop owner, I’d love to give one of my readers a set of my favorite oil & vinegar and the cutest whisk in the entire world.

Feeling put together is important to me. For me, that means a nice holiday table setting when company comes for Christmas Dinner. But my little people are small and a fussy table just doesn’t work for us. So I’m sharing my best tip for a holiday table setting while hosting company for dinner during the holidays.

ten minute holiday table setting tutorial

For me, the kitchen & the dining room are two areas I like to spread Christmas cheer. But they are also frequently trafficked by my three {destructive} little helpers. ten minute holiday table setting tutorialSo I’ve developed a system for hosting a Christmas dinner without the ‘don’t touch that!’ stress.ten minute holiday table setting tutorialNow, this doesn’t mean you won’t still have helpers. But this way, you don’t have to defend your beautifully set table for more than just a few minutes. If you’re lucky, your helpers will actually help. This table setting takes less than ten minutes (eight, to be exact! – you can watch the video of me actually setting my table on my facebook page here)
tips & tricks for beautiful holiday table setting

And one of the best parts? Clean up is just as easy! With white craft paper for the holiday table cloth, you can just roll it up, shake out the crumbs & recycle. No laundry, no stains. It doesn’t get better than that. ten minute holiday table setting tutorial

So, for the tutorial. To set your perfect holiday table in under ten minutes, you’ll need to prep ahead of time. I gather everything and put it in a basket & put the basket out of reach. Then, about 15 minutes before I expect my guests, I whip out my basket and dress my table. So, to prepare: grab a basket. Roll your napkins, tie with twine & tuck in your favorite decoration. I used a bit of greenery from my Costco garland and a candy cane. Inexpensive and beautiful? Yes, please! ten-minute-holiday-table-setting-tutorial-9

Next, add in your plates. ten-minute-holiday-table-setting-tutorial-10

Put your vases, flowers & candles in your basket.

ten-minute-holiday-table-setting-tutorial-11

Place your votive holders and a few ornaments on top.

ten-minute-holiday-table-setting-tutorial-12And then put in your garland. Mine is real & smells amazing! It also lasts the entire month & stays flexible. I fold my garland in about 18-20 sections which makes the cool zig zag when I pull it out.
ten-minute-holiday-table-setting-tutorial-13

Set your basket aside until company comes or right before. You just pull everything out and set it on the table in the opposite order you put it in the basket. You can watch me set the table here

And ta da! You are all ready to host a fun Christmas Dinner party! Your table will look like it’s straight out of pinterest and only you & me will know it was THAT easy. Heck, you may just find yourself inviting people over because you love hearing them tell you how pretty your table is. Not that I would ever do that 😉

Have you wondered if I quilt anymore? I have. But I’ve been designing patterns again, which is so nice. Feeling my creativity return has been helpful on so many levels, especially with my self esteem. It’s funny how we define ourselves by how we spend our time. Sewing always makes me feel a little better about who I am as a person. With the sun spending most of the day hiding now, I can’t get enough of my new, sunshiney quilt. I designed this quilt based on a vintage quilt I spotted a few years ago. I drew up the templates, made a test block, and then my anxiety took over my life and this little quilt had to take a backseat. Now that I am back in control, I thought it was time to finish it and put it out there.

instagram-11-21-2016-16

I made the conscious decision to make this quilt with a yellow background even though it’s very different than anything I’ve done before. The color makes the rest of my landscape not quite so bleak. This year especially I’m feeling that tug towards thoughts that don’t lift me or make life better and the yellow reminds me of sunshiney days. I think it’s time to make a vitamin D supplement a part of my routine.
delightful quilt pattern from a crafty fox yellow dresden quilt

I named the quilt ‘Delightful’ because these blocks are really fun to make. They come together quickly and make a big splash! I could see a patchwork sashing being a fun variation on this pattern as well! As it is, there is no sashing and no borders, just a repeated block.

delightful-quilt-1

I’ve listed the pattern for sale in my shop here. I wish I’d had time to make it up in Christmas colors! Wouldn’t it be fun in pinks & reds?!

delightful-quilt-pattern_cover

So, if you need me, I’ll be curled up under this little quilt admiring the snow, but plotting ways to escape it. Can you believe these pictures were only taken a week apart?

Thank you for reading. If you’d like to grab a copy of Delightful and make your own, you can find the pattern in my little shop here.

My outfit:
Red Sweater – old, H&M but you can find a similar sweater here and it’s 30% off!

I also got a few questions on my sweater from my last post

I purchased it from Boden two years ago but I hunted around and found this very similar one that looks to be a good quality! (and I love this one in red so much!)

Every year about this time, present wrapping becomes an evening after-the-kids-go-to-bed activity. There is nothing like sitting under the Christmas tree with Bing Crosby crooning White Christmas in the background to take me back to my childhood.

how-to-wrap-a-perfect-present-with-just-scotch-tape-8Growing up, I wrapped a lot of gifts. One of my strongest memories is sitting in my parents’ room surrounded by boxes with names scrawled in my mom’s familiar handwriting. It was my job to convert these plain, white boxes into magical, imagination tempting presents. I must have practiced well because later on I became the official gift wrapper for a local department store. I tell you this so when I say this is the PERFECT way to wrap a gift, you’ll know I am no amateur.how-to-wrap-a-perfect-present-with-just-scotch-tape-1

The most important part of the wrapping process is your tape. Even when I was little, my mom only bought Scotch® Gift Wrap Tape. No other brand of tape will hold your present together all month long. This year, I headed to Walmart & picked up the Scotch® Gift Wrap Tape 3 Pack Caddie and the Scotch™ Multi-Purpose Scissor 8”.
scotch-gloryYou can find it next to the wrapping paper in the gift wrap aisle.
How To Wrap The Perfect Package
The first step to a perfect package is cutting a piece of wrapping paper double the width plus about 5 inches and the height of the gift plus double the depth. Don’t get out your rulers, just lay your item on your paper and make sure it has the full amount of depth and if you wrap it around your gift you have about 5″ of overlap.

how-to-wrap-a-perfect-present-with-just-scotch-tape-2

Next, place your gift on the left side of the paper and fold it over the top until about 1-1/2″ hangs over the top edge and tape that in place.

how-to-wrap-a-perfect-present-with-just-scotch-tape-3Fold the right side of the paper up and over until it hangs off the left side. Use the edge of the package as your guide and fold the paper so the seam lines up right on the edge. Use your handy Scotch® Gift Wrap Tape 3 Pack Caddie and break off a piece about an inch long per 10 inches of present. With Scotch® Gift Wrap Tape, a little goes a long way!

how-to-wrap-a-perfect-present-with-just-scotch-tape-4Once you’ve sealed the paper around your package, you’ll want to finish the ends. My favorite way to wrap the ends is by pressing both sides in and flat. Use a small piece of tape to hold the middle together for larger gifts, but for this little book, you can just press the top down.

how-to-wrap-a-perfect-present-with-just-scotch-tape-5Now, fold the edge of your paper to create a smooth edge. Using a small piece of tape to hold it perfectly together.

how-to-wrap-a-perfect-present-with-just-scotch-tape-6For your last step, you’ll just repeat the steps you used for the other side. Now, there are a hundred ways to put together a perfect bow. Since these packages are going to be under the tree for awhile, I always place a piece of tape right under the bow holding the ribbon to the paper. This keeps everything looking fresh & pretty for the entire month!

how-to-wrap-a-perfect-present-with-just-scotch-tape-7This year, Scotch® Gift Wrap Tape 3 Pack Caddie has 50% more & is just $2.98 at Walmart as part of their Rollback program. I’ve already needed two caddies so make sure to stock up early! Scotch has also teamed up with Fisher House, a place for military & veterans families to stay while loved ones receive treatment. This holiday season Scotch® Brand will be donating $200,000 to Fisher House. If you’d like to join them in supporting our veterans, you can donate here.

This week has been such a whirlwind! We have my husband’s fun (big!) family to our home & are having so much fun. The turkey, stuffing, casseroles, mashed potatoes and rolls all finished at about the same time and with a lot of help, we pulled off a perfect Thanksgiving dinner. I’ll always remember it!  I still squeezed in a bit of shopping today (it’s right before Christmas, but I snagged this coat in black that I’ve been dying for for 40% off). J Crew’s sale today is the perfect way to pick up nice wool sweaters and basics you can use for years at 40% off with the coupon HOLIDAY! Just a heads up in case you need warm winter basics! j-crew-icon-trench-coat

Today is my day on the Quilt Petite Blog Hop!  Sedef Imer of the incredibly beautiful blog Down Grapevine Lane just released her first book! If you haven’t heard about this sweet little book yet, I’d love to introduce you! You’ll find Sedef’s little projects perfect for getting your sew-jo back. Full of little quilts, easy wins, and pretty results, you’ll quickly find yourself head over heels for Sedef’s work.

If you participate in our little shop’s Liberty of London monthly club, you’ll definitely want to grab a copy of this little book. The patterns are perfect for dainty little prints. Of course, I had just been sorting my scrap bin and had to grab a few pieces that jumped out at me.

I’ve had my eye on this little pinwheels quilt since I first opened the book. This little mini quilt has everything I love about quilting in one little pattern. Perfect little points? check. Lots of movement? check. A great way to showcase scraps? check and check. So I had to make a test block (of course!)

quilt-petite-blog-hop-2-1

And it was so cute & I loved the little pincusion on the back cover of Quilt Petite so much I instantly turned that one block into a new pincushion. Isn’t it adorable?!

So, if you are looking to make some quick, simply projects over your holiday but don’t want to get stuck in yet another huge, unfinishable project, make sure you grab a copy of Quilt Petite: 18 Sweet and Modern Mini Quilts and More. If you signed up for my little hoop swap, and you had a few pictures in your instagram feed, you should have an email from me with your partner in your inbox! And before all of the sewing gets crazy and my company arrives, I’m spending my free time with a good book.
Girl Reading A Book Perfect Reading SpotSewing is fun, but my first love will always be pretty books. On my November bucket list, one of the items was to read fiction. I read a LOT.  My Audible list never finds itself neglected. But lately everything has been business and self help. Fiction is the ultimate splurge. Like something terribly indulgent and amazingly relaxing. So while I am burying myself in my new book (Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas!) I’m sharing the books that have given me safe haven no matter what was going on around me in the prettiest editions I’ve ever seen. So here’s my perfect gift list for the bookworms in your life!
gift-list-for-bookworms-01
The Little House on the Prairie – My very first chapter book. I remember reading this seated on the floor of the library at my elementary school. The story transported me to the American West and my imagination was hooked. This is the exact same copy I read so many years ago.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (and all of The Chronicles of Narnia) – This series by CS Lewis tells a beautiful story. The first time I read it, I missed all of the Christian references, but now when I read it the layers strike me as inspired. I’ve learned so much from these books. I began collecting hardbound editions exactly like these in college, saving up and buying them one at a time. They are still on my list of favorite things!
Jane Eyre –  This book introduced me to romances. The perfect story, the perfect anti-hero, the perfect meet cute… everything about Jane Eyre, no matter how many times I read it, just feels perfect. I have a few copies of this book. Resisting a pretty book, especially an old one, isn’t my strength. this edition came into my collection in Portland at Powell’s a few years ago during quilt market. The outside is as perfect as the inside!
Girl Reading Book Gift List for BookwormsAnne of Green Gables (illustrated by Anna Riflebond) This book has always been my favorite, but when Anna did the artwork on the exterior, I had to buy it. Even though I already have this beautiful, clothbound pink version (that would make a FANTASTIC gift for a little girl!) Pretty books are a weakness of mine, can you tell?

Little Women – A gifted copy of Little Women from my grandmother might be my most treasured possession. I’ve read it dozens of times and the binding has gotten soft and I worry for its future. So when I saw this pretty copy on Anna Riflebond’s instagram, it appeared on my shelf two days later (thanks, Amazon ;))

Best Gift List for BookwormsAnd my current favorites Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses. These two series are fantastic, but not G rated. More like PG13 bordering on R. But again, the story just sucked me in. When I closed the last book, it felt like I shut the door on my best friends.

So, in between baking pies, entertaining my family, and sewing about a million lavender rice bags for the winter, you’ll find me here getting lost between pages of mystery and adventure.  And romance. Always romance.

Girl Reading A Book Pride and Prejudice (A Penguin Classics Hardcover)

How do you choose what to buy vs. what to make? If you don’t already know, getting dressed makes me happy. Even if only my little people see me, I want to look put together. Don’t get me wrong, yoga pants have their place, but in my book they are an evening/sunday after church luxury. But lately, the age old ‘make it/buy it’ conundrum keeps circling through my brain. The cost of making can often make me head to the nearest store to grab a t-shirt, but wearing something you’ve made (or seeing something you made on your baby) gives you a feeling no money can buy.

For me, plain t-shirts fall into the make-it camp. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Sewing clothes again feels good. In middle and high school, about 70% of my wardrobe was handmade, often designed by my mom or myself. I even designed (And still own!) my prom dress. As I got into my junior & senior year, my own job brought store-bought items into my wardrobe.

Now, it feels like a new stage of life has arrived. Making things that really fit, with high quality materials and not wondering if I’ll see it on someone else walking through the grocery store brings me a smile. And leaves me more money for nice shoes.

Art Gallery Knits made the decision to make my own shirts easy. I use the Lane Raglan pattern. Now my knit shirts fit, they cover my bum when I bend over, and I can make the sleeves long enough.

So, do you sew clothes? How do you choose what to buy & what to make?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

If you’re curious about sources, I’ve started sharing the details here. When you click the links, I make a few cents which helps me keep up my blog. Thank you for reading and always being so supportive!

My shirt – Art Gallery Knit in Sahara Sun & This Pattern (Made by me & neckline fixed by my mom)

My {favorite} fall booties – On sale here. (Similar here for half the price)
My bracelets are Alex & Ani. (I collect one from each place I travel. I’m currently hoping for a London Bridge one since I couldn’t find one over there! And I want this one for Christmas!)

A’s Leggings – Art Gallery Knit in Navy (made by my mom)
